What size lampshade do I need?

Choosing the right lampshade can completely change the feel of a space. The goal is to create something that feels balanced, soft, and natural within your home.

When selecting a lampshade, focus on proportion rather than strict rules.

A good guideline:

  • The shade should feel in balance with the base—not too small, not overpowering
  • The width of the shade is often close to the height of the lamp base
  • The shade should sit comfortably below the bulb and hardware

If you already have a shade you like, using it as a reference is often the easiest way to find what works.

Understanding Our Sizes

All Cecelia White Studio lampshades are measured by the bottom diameter.

Each shade is thoughtfully proportioned with a slightly tapered shape for a soft, classic look.

Please note our Lampshades come up sightly bigger when the lampshade cover is on top

If you’re unsure where to start, these general pairings can help:

Tiny Shades
6” shades
Best suited for wall-mounted lights. These come with candle clip fittings that sit directly on the bulb.

Small Shades
8” shades
Ideal for small side tables or narrow console tables.

Medium Shades
10” and 12” shades
Versatile, everyday sizes that work well with most standard table lamps and bedside lamps.

Large Shades
14” and 16” shades
Best for larger bases, statement lamps, or spaces that need a bit more presence.

Fittings & Hardware

The 10”, 12”, and 14” shades are made with a spider fitting and are designed for use with a lamp base fitted with a harp and finial.

Accordion shades are made with candle clip fittings to sit directly on the bulb.

The 16” coolie shade is designed as a pendant fixture and is intended to hang.
